Angleton's Vision for the Future: Comprehensive Plan Update and Resiliency Grant

Angleton, the heart of Brazoria County and a city known for its strong community spirit and charming small-town atmosphere, is embarking on an ambitious journey to shape its future.

In an effort to guide growth and maintain its unique character, the City of Angleton has applied for the General Land Office’s Resilient Communities Program (GLO RCP) grant to update its Comprehensive Plan. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to planning, aiming to ensure that Angleton not only keeps pace with development but also promotes growth in a resilient and sustainable manner.

A Legacy of Planning

Angleton's planning efforts date back to the early 1970s, with the first Comprehensive Plan adopted in 1971. Since then, the city has periodically updated its plan to reflect changing conditions and aspirations. The most recent update in 2021 incorporated the "Downtown Angleton Livable Center Study," demonstrating Angleton's continuous commitment to thoughtful and strategic development.

The Need for an Update

The rapid growth and development in and around Angleton, coupled with the challenges posed by multiple flood events, underscore the need for an updated Comprehensive Plan. This update will address sustainability, resilience, and the integration of mitigation strategies outlined in the 2017 Brazoria County Hazard Mitigation Plan. It aims to reflect current conditions, evaluate the effectiveness of existing recommendations, and promote smart growth and sustainable community practices.

Goals and Updates

The updated Comprehensive Plan will serve as a guiding document for the next decade, incorporating the vision and goals identified by the City’s most current adopted Strategic Plan. It will also align with policies and plans to address mitigation strategies, aiming to enhance Angleton's resilience to hazards and ensure sustainable growth.

The plan will address several key areas, including:

  • Vision & Goals: Aligning with the 2018 Strategic Plan to guide development.
  • Demographic and Housing Studies: Providing estimates and projections for the next 10-20 years.
  • Land Use and Zoning: Reviewing current ordinances and preparing updates to manage future growth while preserving Angleton's distinctive character.
  • Growth Capacity & Infrastructure: Addressing strategic needs for water, wastewater, and storm drainage systems.
